M.S. Estate is located at an altitude of 800 to 1430 metres above sea level on the picturesque slopes of the Sehyadari Range in Chikmagalur. Originally a British plantation, M.S. Estate has been part of the Balanoor Plantations (owned by the Kuriyan family) since the 1930’s. Today, the estate is run by the fourth and fifth generation of the family, Ashok and his son Rohan.
Coffee is shade grown under Silver Oat, Dadap & Jungle trees. The spice crops in the vicinity tend to have an influence on the coffees which display a hint of spice.
Coffee Processing involves the following: Natural Fermenting - Aqua Washing + Underwater Soaking - Drying on Trough - Sun Drying then Shade Drying on 2nd and 3rd day between 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Coffee is initially dried on raised platforms for couple of days.
M.S Estate is home to plenty of birds on the estate (Peacock, Woodpecker, Laggar Falcon, Jungle Fowl, Sparrows, Crows, Minivet, Bulbul, Flower Pecker, Myna, Owl, Indian Parakeet, Wild Pigeon & migratory birds) & even animals (Bison, Sambar, Deer, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Wild Boar, Wild Goat, Fox, Hare).
M.S Estate have their own effluent treatment tanks & practice ecological and nature friendly cultivation package to preserve natural forests as a part of the plantations. With plenty of annual rainfall, MS estate have set up check dams for water conservation & to prevent soil erosion.
